SOCIOLOGY—Paper I

Time Allowed—3' Hours Full marks—100

If the question attempted are in excess of the prescribed number only the questions attempted first up to the prescribed number shall be valued and the remaining ones ignored. Answer may be given either in English or in Bengali but all answers must be in one and the same language.

Answer any three questions from Group A and any two from Group B.

All Questions carry equal marks.

Group A

Answer any three questions.

1. Critically discuss Marx's theory of social change.

2. How does the functionalist perspective explain maintenance of social order ?

3. What, according to Durkheim, are the functions of division of labour in society ?

4. Distinguish between power and authority. How would you explain legitimation crisis in modern political system ?

5. Examine the social consequences of science and technology. Is there any conflict between ethos of science and social responsibility of science?

Group B

Answer any two questions.

6. Suppose you are doing a survey research in a tribal village. What kind of observation method would be suitable for you ? Put arguments in favour of it.

7. Examine the place of Sorcery and Witchcraft in the World of Magic, Religion and Science.

8. "Society is cooperation crossed by conflict". — Explain.
